Indoor Fruit Fly Trap - FAQs
About the Indoor Fruit Fly Trap
How does the EnviroSafe Indoor Fruit Fly Trap work?
The EnviroSafe Indoor Fruit Fly Trap utilizes a powdered food-grade attractant (the Indoor Fruit fly Trap Eco-bait) which is added to hot water to lure indoor fruit flies into the trap where they drown in the liquid. Once they enter through the small holes in the lid, they are unable to find their way out and drown in the liquid, providing an effective and pesticide-free solution.
How do I set up the trap?
- Open: Remove the stainless steel lid from the ceramic trap base.
- Add Eco-bait powder: Open the enclosed bait sachet and pour the powder into the base.
- Add boiling water: Half fill the trap with just boiled water (about 100ml) while stirring – just like making coffee!
- Place: Pop the lid back on. Your trap is now active and ready to use.
No twisting, no batteries, and no complicated assembly required!
Where should I set the Indoor Fruit Fly Trap?
For best results, place the trap in areas where you’ve seen the most fruit fly activity. Common hotspots include:
- On the kitchen counter near the fruit bowl.
- Under the kitchen sink near the compost caddy or bin.
- On top of or near the refrigerator.
Avoid placing the trap in areas affected by direct drafts or vents.
How long will it take to start seeing results?
You should start seeing flies in the trap within a few hours. For a significant reduction in the fruit fly population, allow 2-3 days. For a major infestation, it may take up to a week to see a dramatic difference.
Is the attractant liquid safe around my children and pets?
Yes, the attractant is made from non-toxic, food-grade ingredients. However, it is not meant for consumption. For safety, we recommend placing the trap in a location where it cannot be easily knocked over by pets or children, such as the back of a counter.
The trap is full of flies. What do I do now?
- Dispose: Pour the flies in the bait liquid down the sink or into your outside compost bin.
- Wash: Place the trap and lid into the dishwasher or wash by hand with hot soapy water.
- Refill: Re-set the trap with a new sachet of Indoor Fruit Fly Eco-bait.
No twisting, no batteries, and no complicated assembly required!
The trap has been out for days, but I'm still seeing flies. Why isn't it working?
A few things could be happening:
- The Source is Still Active: The trap catches adult flies, but it doesn't eliminate the source. Locate and dispose of any overripe fruit, vegetables, or organic matter that may be harbouring eggs and larvae. Clean compost caddies and bins thoroughly, including the charcoal filter in the lid if fitted.
- It Needs a Refill: The attractant loses potency over time. If it's been over three weeks, empty, wash, and refill the trap with fresh bait.
- You Might Have a Different Pest: Ensure the pests you're seeing are actually fruit flies (small, tan, with red eyes) and not another type, like fungus gnats (from plant soil) or drain flies (moth-like).
How many traps will I need for my home?
For a standard kitchen, one trap is usually sufficient. For larger spaces, open-concept homes, or if you have multiple problem areas (e.g., a kitchen counter-top and an under- sink cupboard), we recommend using two traps for best coverage.
Does it use a bait/lure to attract Fruit Flies?
Yes, the EnviroSafe Indoor Fruit Fly Trap comes with a sachet of food-grade, non-toxic attractant powder – the Indoor Fruit Fly Eco-bait. Pour the powder into the trap and add 100ml (about half filling the trap) with boiling water. Stir to mix and then set the trap close to where Indoor Fruit Flies have been seen. Bait refills are also available separately in stores.
Will the trap smell?
When first set up, the attractant has a faint, sweet, vinegar-like scent that is attractive to fruit flies but typically not overpowering for humans.
Can I use the Indoor Fruit Fly Trap outdoors?
No, the Indoor Fruit Fly Trap is specifically designed for indoor use only. This trap will not attract or catch outdoor fruit fly species because those flies are attracted to the odours of fruit that are still ripening on the tree. In contrast, indoor fruit flies are attracted fully ripe or over-ripe fruit which emit different odours.
